    Pdms bonding on glass

Pdms pieces and cover glasses should be perfectly clean before putting them into the machine, otherwise the process will not take place.

    Here the two stages protocol:

1 - Before starting to operate the plasma cleaner, please check oil level looking into the inspection window (A-yellow rectangle); it should be between the two arrows on the left of the window.

2- turn on the machine with the main power switch (4)

    First stage : Chamber cleaning

(this stage of the bonding process has to be executed every day the machine is used to increase the efficiency of the bonding process.)

    • Close the chamber (3),
    • activate the pump by pressing the switch (10) and wait until the chamber pressure is near or below o.4 mbar (pressure indicator 5).
    • Once the pressure is at the desired level, open the O2 tank and regulate the O2 adapter so that the pressure indicated by (17) is between 1 and 2 bar.
    • open gas1 needle valve (13) and regulate the volume of O2 between 20 and 60 (indicator 6)
    • once the pressure is stable again, switch on the generator (11) and set the timer (9) to 5 minutes (300 seconds)
    • at the end of the process switch off the generator if you are using an external timer, switch off the pump,
    • close the need valve (13)
    • and ventilate the chamber (switch 12).

    Second stage: bonding

at this point the machine is ready to perform plasma treatment on your sample. Note that if you have already done the cleaning of the chamber you do not have to repeat it in the same working session.

    • put your samples (pdms, with the structers on the top, and glass) on the glass tray covered with an aluminium foil (fix with tape coverglasses on the foil otherwise they will fly away during the ventilation)
    • insert the tray in  and close the chamber (3)
    • turn on the vacuum pump (10) and wait until the pressure is around 0.4 mbar
    • once the pressure is at the desired level open the needle valve (13) as you did for the cleaning
    • wait until pressure stabilises around 0.4 mbar and then switch on the generator (11) for one minute
    • at the end of the process switch off the generator if you are using an external timer, switch off the pump,
    • close the need valve (13)
    • and ventilate the chamber (switch 12).
    • remove the tray from the chamber and put the pdms on the glass without pressing on it

At the end of the working session please be sure that the O2 tank is closed and no residual oxygen is present in the circuit (indicators 6, 17, and 16 must be on 0).

    Enjoy,

    Gianfranco
